The Challenge

BSMMU serves a dual mandate as Bangladesh's only public postgraduate medical university and a major tertiary referral hospital. Its laboratories process thousands of complex clinical and research samples weekly, serving both inpatients and postgraduate medical students in residency training. This dual function created unique and compounding challenges:

  • Clinical samples from the wards competed for processing capacity with student-supervised academic tests, creating unpredictable backlogs — particularly during academic assessment periods.
  • Research sample data was stored in departmental silos with no integration into the clinical LIS, preventing faculty from correlating clinical outcomes with ongoing research findings.
  • Paper-based specimen requisition forms were frequently lost, incomplete, or illegible — a particular problem with the high volume of referrals arriving from across Bangladesh's tertiary referral network.
  • Resident doctors and postgraduate students had no digital access to historical patient lab data for case study preparation, relying on photocopied records that were frequently outdated or unavailable.

The Solution

Logic & Pixel Technologies designed a bespoke LIS configuration specifically addressing BSMMU's academic-clinical hybrid environment — a solution architecture unique among our deployments:

  • Referral Tracking System: A structured referral intake workflow for samples arriving from district hospitals and upazila health complexes across Bangladesh, with automated acknowledgement notifications sent back to referring clinicians.

The Implementation

Given BSMMU's status as a public institution with complex procurement and academic governance requirements, our implementation team worked closely with the university's IT directorate, laboratory department heads, and the hospital's clinical administration for an extended planning phase of 6 weeks before any technical deployment began. This ensured full compliance with government IT procurement guidelines and the university's internal academic calendar, scheduling the go-live to coincide with an inter-semester break to minimize clinical disruption.

Technical deployment was completed in 5 weeks across all major laboratory departments including Clinical Pathology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Histopathology, and Transfusion Medicine.
